The Important Benefits Of Kiwifruit For Diabetes

Ninety per cent of all diabetics are type-2. This means they are not dependent on insulin, but must choose their diet and lifestyle with extra care. Type-2 diabetes is sometimes also referred to as sugar diabetes. Type-1 diabetics are the other 10% and are dependent on taking insulin.

The big problem today with type-2 diabetes is the rate of how fast it is increasing due to obesity, especially in children. Not enough exercise, eating to much saturated fat and refined sugars are the main problem.

Including any type of fruit in the diet is recommended and healthy in general and the kiwi just happens to be the most nutrient-dense fruit of them all, so it's an excellent choice in that regard. The kiwifruit provides many health benefits for everyone, and has specific benefits for diabetes.

Fructose levels

Fruit in general has a higher level of natural fruit sugar, or fructose that doesn't need insulin to be absorbed. Because these fruit sugars are converted into glucose by the liver, it makes fruit a good option for diabetics. The other nutritional advantages are the high amounts of healthy dietary fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, but also low in sodium and fat.

Kiwifruit has a fairly low Glycemic index at 52 in a 120 g serving, meaning it wouldn't raise blood glucose levels very fast at all, making it a good choice for the diabetes lifestyle.

Inositol - sugar alcohol

The high amounts of vitamin C and dietary fiber make the kiwi a good choice for everyone to eat them daily, but what is not so well known is it contains a simple carbohydrate known as inositol. This is a sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in kiwifruit which research suggests it plays a role in regulating diabetes.

Reduce your risk with fiber

Yes, dietary fiber can reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease as well. Fiber can prevent constipation which can increase risk of getting diabetes. One single kiwi has as buck dietary fiber as three sticks of celery and one bowel of cereal. It has been proven that eating two kiwifruit everyday can improve bowel movements and consistency.

More benefits

Of course there are many more health benefits in eating kiwifruit. Since it is the most nutrient fruit, eating one is like taking mother nature's own multivitamin. Add to that the fiber content, enzymes which break down food for proper digestion, and phenolic compounds which fight dangerous cancer-producing cells, and it truly makes this a real "superfood".
